For their 30-year anniversary, Canadian wheel weight company, Plombco, commissioned a poster design honoring this historic date. This was a particularly fun and interesting project. After receiving a care package of their wheel weights and some other products, I began the concept process. The more I laid them down and began to arrange them, I started to see really amazing patterns and lots of potential for a brilliant abstract.
I was living in the Southern California desert at the time, in a town called, Pioneertown, and had fortunately just cut fire wood. What if I were to arrange these around a piece of wood in which the wheel weights would represent “years in business” the way tree rings represent the current age of a tree? It manifest very quickly and what is contained here is a collection of preliminary shots and experiments, the two early drafts of the poster, as well as the final piece that was submitted to press.
This is still to this day one of my favorite projects and I am still honored that I was given the opportunity to lean in on natural materials, experimentation and abstraction.
